Poquonock Community Church, Congregational

Bible Verse for March: “You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.”  1 Peter 1:18-19 (NRSV)

Lenten Prayer Meeting 7-8 p.m., in the Lounge. Those who gathered for prayer on Ash Wednesday have decided to continue praying for our church and other concerns Tuesday evenings through Lent. Anyone is welcome to participate. During these prayer meetings, there will be opportunities for healing prayer for those who wish it.
March 13 Daylight Saving Time: Remember to turn your clocks ahead 1 hour this Saturday.
March 17 Newsletter Deadline For Next Issue (April), Wednesday, March 17, 2009. All articles must be placed in the Newsletter Mailbox in the office or received by e-mail by the deadline date. If you are sending by e-mail, articles must be sent to the editor, Suzanne Flake.
March 19 ANNUAL REPORTS: It’s that time of year again. All boards must submit to the office an annual report. If you are new to this and need a guide, please contact Mary and she can give you a copy of last year’s report. The deadline for submitting is March 19th. Thank you for your promptness.
March 21 Easter Plants will decorate our sanctuary Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday with psalms, lilies and tulips. Plants may be purchased for $9 each and given in memory of a loved one or in honor of a special person or event. Names will be listed in the Easter Sunday Bulletin. Please give payment with the special names to Cathy Butterworth, or leave in the church office by March 21st. If you have questions, call Cathy Butterworth at (860)285-0624.
March 21 Women’s Fellowship Spring Craft Sale: The Women’s Fellowship craft group will have their craft sale March 21 after worship in Robertson Hall. They have been busy making a variety of spring items. Please take a moment to stop by and support this group of busy crafters; maybe picking up an item or two.—Dee Tyszka
March 24 The Women’s Fellowship will meet Wednesday, at 7 p.m. in Robertson Hall. We’ll play a new, fun, non-threatening game.
April 1 Special Maundy Thursday Service: The Last Supper, which we commemorate every Maundy Thursday during Holy Week, was a Passover Supper—a Seder. This year, we will be led in the same supper that Jesus shared with his disciples by Rabbi Paul Saal, of Shuvah Yisrael, a messianic synagogue in Bloomfield. We will experience together the people of God’s “Exodus” from slavery in Egypt, and our Lord’s Last Supper with his disciples. We are now looking for people to help with this (setting up, cooking, clean-up, etc.). If you would like to help, let pastor know, or talk with one of the Deacons or Christian Ed Committee members. This is a meal that is also a worship service, and is definitely child-friendly. Children are not only welcomed here, but they are needed, for children play an important part in the Seder.—Pastor
May 2 CALL FOR CONGREGATIONAL MEETING: Following the service our church will hold its Annual Meeting to discuss the 2010-11 budget, approve new and existing board members, and discuss board reports. Any other pertinent church business may also be brought up at this time. All members are urged to attend this very important meeting.

A FEW ITEMS TO NOTE

Nominators: Romans 12:8 "If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly."—From the Hands On Bible, NLT. With that said, we encourage you to pray about your place in the church and where you are to serve. Our church has many wonderful people working for the Lord and keeping Him first. It is truly appreciated! As the Nominator's board gears up for another year of filling a slate of nominees, we hope and pray that you will have thought and prayed about this crucial time before we call you. Yes, we will call you. We want to hear from you. We want your input on nominees and ways that we may better our church. Blessing to you all! The Nominating Board

Change for Good Penny Drive: Have you started to save those pennies yet? Eleven-year-old Connor Bailey is hoping you have as he kicks off his 7th annual Change for Good Penny Drive in March/April, to benefit the Windsor Food Bank. This year he has set his goal at $3,500. Connor wants you to know that your spare change can go a long way to help your fellow neighbors keep food on the table this spring. He is also collecting your returnable soda cans, soda bottles and now will start taking the water bottles which have a 5¢ redemption. Connor appreciates the cans and bottles that you have been saving for him. They are helpful in his making his goal each year.—Dee Tyszka

CALLING ALL MEMBERS:  It is time again to start thinking about using your gifts and talents for the church.  What do you like to do?  Our church cannot run without you!  Please be thinking how you can help the church.  The Nominators Board has started to work on the new Board’s slate.  If you are feeling “called” to work on a certain Board or would like to nominate someone for a Board, please let the Nominators know.  This is “your church”!  It is “our church”!  The Nominators Board will be calling to talk with members about our church and the boards.  Please pray for the direction of our church, the Nominator’s and what position you can do to keep our church growing and welcoming.

PCC Cookbook:  As a tasteful and long lasting gift, we will have a PCC Cookbook as an upcoming fundraiser.  We are asking everyone to start digging up your favorite recipes and send them to Dee or Fay. We are working on gathering recipes for the first three weeks in February.  We would appreciate if ALL members could give at least one (we will accept as many as you will give us!) recipe to help create our collection.  This cookbook will take some time to finalize.  We would love to have it completed and ready to sell by Mother's Day.  However, we can not do this without everyone's help...that includes our male cooks!  This cookbook will be a fundraiser for us.  We hope to have 150 recipes collected for ONLY $10.  What a nice and fun gift this would be for anyone.  Please help us by sending in your recipes in the next couple of weeks and by ordering your cookbooks.

The Friday Bible Study Group is on winter vacation until March 5, 2010.

Snow Cancellations: In the event that we need to cancel a service or a church program due to bad weather, we will notify you as follows: E-mail (If we have advanced warning) Church website; WTNH-TV (Channel 8); WFSB-TV (Channel 3); WVIT-TV (Channel 30) WDRC Radio

Library: A special “Thank You” goes out to Suzanne Flake for her time in keeping our church library in order and up-to-date. Thank you for all the years you have helped the church in this manner (one of the many ways you give of your time and talents). Also at this time, please consider taking over the library duties for Suzanne. Please consider taking over for Suzanne.  She will be glad to help guide or teach someone the duties.  This is not a board position and your time can be very flexible!  Please contact Suzanne or a member of the Nominators Board if you are interested.

E-Mails:  We are attempting to build-up our e-mail list.  Anyone who is not on our list or has changed e-mails in the last year, please fill out a blue card and send it to the office.  Thanks.

Reminder – Child care is now available during all church meetings. Contact Suzanne Flake at 219-1151. There is also a sign-up sheet in the loggia.

Hospitality: We are currently seeking volunteers to help with hospitality duties. If you are interested in providing and/or serving after-service refreshments, please check out the sign-up sheet in the loggia and volunteer for a Sunday.

Men’s Breakfast The men of the church meet on the third Sunday of each month for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in Robertson Hall. All men of the church are welcome to join them. Why not consider joining the group!

On the 1st Sunday of each month the kitchen and refrigerator will be cleaned and cleared of all items.  These items will be disposed of.

The Windsor Food Bank is in need of non-perishable food.  Macaroni & cheese, pasta, sauces, canned soup, healthy snacks, peanut butter, jelly.  Please bring some food in and put it near the CMSC board. Thanks.

Security Reminder ~ When leaving the church, please make sure all doors have been closed and locked and all lights are off.

Our flower chart is posted in the loggia. Please sign up for a Sunday if you would like to remember a loved one or honor someone special. Contact Suzanne Flake or the church office for more information

Prayer Chain:  If you would like to be contacted to pray for emergencies, crisis and sudden needs, see either Lynne Hosig, Beth Storey, or Pastor.  You will be notified of prayer needs by e-mail.  If you would like to participate and don’t have an e-mail, we can arrange to call you.

CD’s of Sunday Services are made every week. Anyone who would like a free copy of a service, please contact Brian Wetzel

Small Group: Every Monday evening a small group of us meet for intercessory prayer from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the lounge. Persons may pray aloud or simply join us in silent prayer. Please feel free to join on an occasional or regular basis. See pastor or Bob Gridley for more information.

Filling out an encouragement card? Please remember that, for mailing purposes, the address must go on the blank side of the post card. Your message goes on the side with the scripture passage from Hebrews 10:25.

Free Christian literature is available in the loggia: With the exception of "Today's Christian," (New name for The Christian Reader) which is $2.00/copy, all other literature on the loggia table is free. "The Upper Room" and "Guideposts" are available in both regular and large print editions and are published every other month.

Deadline for all bulletin announcements is noon on Tuesdays. They may be sent by e-mail to the office, phoned in or dropped off at the office.

Prayer:  Oh Lord, help us to make this a good site in your eyes!
