As the charter organization, the Poquonock Community Church, Congregational history with scouting is extensive.  Originally chartered on     March 15, 1935, it was sponsored by a number of different groups, including the Couple’s Club and the Men’s Fellowship.  The Church began chartering Troop 56 on December 1, 1957.  This year, 2006, Troop 56 will have been organized for 71 years.

Many will recall an affiliation with Troop 56; others will recall scouting in the context of their childhood, whether in Boy Scouting or Girl Scouting and in other locations.  The Poquonock Community Church provides for continuity in scouting, with many Cub Scouts, from Cub Scout Pack 256 (sponsored by St. Joseph's Church), becoming Boy Scouts in Troop 56. The Poquonock Community Church provides meeting space for Brownie and Girl Scouts activities, as well.

Troop 56 is proud of its awards, which are posted on the wall in the hallway, across from the Lounge.

Troop 56 is currently comprised of 49 scouts, who are learning scouting ways in their development from boys to young men.  The Troop is recognized for its level of scout participation with, for example, nearly all joining in the summer scout camp experience. The boy scouts assist in community projects, including Church projects.

During the past year, seven scouts achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the most Eagle Scout accomplishments for the Troop in many years.  This is the list of the latest Eagle Scouts:

bullet Bryan Paul
bullet Tom Marks
bullet Stephen Lake
bullet Shane Semenuk

Being an Eagle Scout is the highest level of achievement in scouting; the rank is awarded at a Court of Honor, a special ceremony, which is held in the Church.  Since first chartered, Troop 56 has had 64 scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

Troop 56 will begin its new scouting year on  March 1.  New scouts are welcome.  Questions on scouting may be directed to Scout Committee members from the Poquonock Community Church, including Terry Schnure, Robert Mayo, Jeff Silliman, and Priscilla Marks.

Jeff Silliman is the Scoutmaster.  Mark Caron serves as the Scout Committee Chairperson.  Terry Schnure is the Charter Organization Representative from the Poquonock Community Church, Congregational.
